' The Voluntary Service is more than a philosophy, a treaty, or a historical institution. It is the embodiment of a worldwide belief that human life and dignity are worthy of respect and protection from the ravages of man and nature. It is a belief that is made real every day by the actions of skilled and trained people who are motivated by a deep personal desire to help others without regard for their own material gain.'

VOLUNTEERING IS A WAY OF LIFE

Or rather should be and can be. After all, we are often volunteering to help, support and do everything we can for our families and friends, so why not for others.. .for the humanity in general. One act of kindness with no ulterior motive, thought of profit or personal gain goes a long way in having peace of mind and generally feeling good. So think about how you would feel if you resolve to do one voluntary act of value to others, but with no gain for yourself, each day of your life.

At the Red Cress Red Crescent Movement Volunteerism is a way of work and life. Voluntary Service is one of the seven Fundamental Principles the Movement and even among the paid staff of the RC/RC Movement the spirit of voluntary service is integral. It is about the work we do. Red Cross Red Crescent Movement is about Humanity and the power behind it. And this power is only effective when it is focused and unadulterated by any diversions or personal interests. Volunteering is essentially motivated by the free will of a person and not by a desire for material or financial gain or by external social, economic or political pressures. And only then it is truly Voluntary.

At Pakistan Red Crescent Society, our volunteers are our strength, all 50,000 of them all over Pakistan. They work in the areas of disaster management, population movement, dissemination of humanitarian values, re-establishment of family links, safe blood drives, community health projects and fund-raising. These volunteers are available in times of peace and unrest as well in situations of natural or man-induced disasters. By being voluntary blood donors and first aiders, they also become role models for others, mainly the young people in the society. But to reach as many in distress as possible, to use the 'Power of Humanity' to help an even greater number of vulnerable, we need more volunteers.
