' The Voluntary Service is more than a philosophy, a treaty, or a historical institution. It is the embodiment of a worldwide belief that human life and dignity are worthy of respect and protection from the ravages of man and nature. It is a belief that is made real every day by the actions of skilled and trained people who are motivated by a deep personal desire to help others without regard for their own material gain.'

VOLUNTEERS FOR BLOOD SAFETY AND BEYOND

Pakistan Red Crescent Society working with the seven Fundamental Principles as the driving force behind all its activities heavily relies on its volunteers with 'voluntary service' being one Fundamental Principle. PRCS volunteers come from all age groups, professions and social brackets, but the majority of volunteers are the young boys and girls of local schools and colleges from all over the country.

These volunteers, motivated by the spirit of humanitarian service, are inducted/registered by their respective local PRCS branch. In the Punjab province, with an active Youth and Volunteer department at the Provincial Headquarters, occasionally the volunteers are inducted in a formal ceremony with the volunteers taking oath of serving the humanity by following the Fundamental Principles and keeping the slogan of the 'Power of Humanity' in mind.

PRCS volunteers are active and involved in all activities that the National Society undertakes. They learn first aid, are voluntary blood donors, and are available and ready if and when a disaster occurs and are excellent disseminators of all information about the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement and Pakistan Red Crescent Society. In some instances, the role of disseminators has been highlighted through the formation of Dissemination and Tracing Teams, who implement the dual functions of dissemination of Fundamental Principles and Humanitarian Values and Tracing of the Missing and Re-establishment of Family Links. The Blood Donor Centre at the PRCS, NHQ, however, has based the very core of its mission, to bring about an attitudinal change regarding voluntary blood donation and awareness of blood safety, on the youth of the society. This was formalized by the establishment of 'Societies for Awareness of Blood Safety'

(SABS) in one hundred secondary, higher secondary and model schools in the government and private sectors of Islamabad. These Societies with the office bearers for each comprising of a chairperson, usually the principal, a coordinator, usually a selected teacher and president, vice~ president, secretary and treasurer being the students, will also have a membership of ten or more students from that school. The foreseen activities of these Societies would include raising awareness about blood safety through individual and group contacts, to distribute information material provided by PRCS and to attend all PRCS organized presentations on relevant topics. The Societies will also conduct fund raising activities as and when permitted by their schools, design and display dissemination materials such as posters and banners and participate in essay, poster and quiz competitions to be organized by PRCS later in the year.

The role of the Blood Donor Center of PRCS, in all this will remain advisory and their staff will be available for consultation even after office hours.
The purpose of the whole exercise is essentially to prepare a future generation of voluntary blood donors and to help prevent the spread of blood borne diseases like various strains of Hepatitis and HIV /AIDS. The SABS members will also be receiving lectures and information on nutrition and healthy living and will also be taught Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) at a later stage. At the formal launching ceremony of SABS with the Federal Minister of Education Ms. Zubeda Jalal as the Chief Guest, specially prepared kits were distributed among the SABS coordinators. These kits comprised of special bags, files, caps, pens, relevant reading material etc. acting as a means of identity for the SABS members. The Honourable Minister, who was visiting PRCS for the second time spoke of the challenges the country faces in the form of the massive spread of blood, transmitted diseases and therefore the need for the safest possible blood transfusion services. She expressed the commitment of the education ministry to the 'empowerment of youth with information that will assist them in leading a safe and healthy life.' She appreciated the PRCS Blood Safety awareness program and termed the launch of SABS 'an excellent example of public and private sector cooperation in health education' and congratulated the leadership of PRCS 'for having a vision and a plan for the development of a future generation of dedicated, committed and educated youth who as voluntary blood donors can not only ensure a better and healthy future for themselves but also be a support for the communities they live in'. The Secretary General, PRCS also spoke of the timely step of the formation of SABS and expressed his gratitude to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies for their support to the program. The event was attended by representatives of UN agencies, WHO, Asian Development Bank and other NGOs and commercial organizations and was widely covered by the print and electronic media.
