SABS is a three tier participatory
programme; that involves parents, teachers and students. It
aims to educate the youth in all aspects of blood safety and
to empower them with information that would- help them adopt
a healthy lifestyle.
After a successful formulation of Societies For Awareness of
Blood Safety (SABS) in 100 public and private schools in Islamabad,
PRCS is ready to take on the second phase of expansion of the
Blood Safety Programme to the Branch level.
The project which was launched in collaboration with the International
Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (lFRC)
in its first phase is now being sponsored by the Japanese International
Cooperation Agency (JICA) in the second.
On the 2nd of May 2003, the Senior Resident Deputy Representative
of JICA, Yojiro Ishi, met the Secretary General of PRCS, Brig
(Retd.) Dr. M.Fazil Mom and in-charge of the Blood Donor Centre
Ms. Asma Cheema for the handing over of 750 new school bags.
These bags contain accessories for 150 schools and are estimated
to benefit 150,000 youth with the provincial branches serving
as the springboard for expansion during 2003 and 2004.
The Secretary General in his speech mentioned that PRCS is
collecting 90% of its blood through nonremunerated blood donors.
In Pakistan 47% of the blood being transfused is unscreened.
The remaining 53% considered as having been tested is not always
screened for Hepatitis Band HIV/AIDS. PRCS however follows a
meticulous selection and screening procedure and may therefore
at times be hardpressed for quantity. Mr. Yojiro appreciated
the role of PRCS in the control of infectious diseases through
its Blood Safety programme and hoped that JICA would be even
better involved in the future.
The project has been inspired by the need to cultivate a positive
attitude towards non-remunerated blood donation. It hopes to
sow the seeds of a future generation of educated youth who as
voluntary blood donors would ensure a healthy future for themselves
and others and create awareness about importance of blood safety,
HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B &C diseases that may spread through
transfusion of un screened blood.
