Pakistan’s Red Crescent Society’s Islamabad Press Release.

Islamabad, August 10, 2004- Organizational structure and the proposed plan of action for the establishment of Pakistan Red Crescent Society’s setup/ facilities for FATA & FANA were comprehensively discussed in a meeting held at the PRCS National Head Quarter.
PRCS proposed plan is to establish its presence in the FATA through fully equipped Mobile Health Units – MHU’s- to provide relief/assistance to the people, particularly women and children. These MHU’s will initiate work in the seven agencies in a phased program of three years. Firstly MHU’s will start work in the Mohmand and Kyber agencies that will be later on extended to other agencies. The proposal has already been discussed and coordinated with the concerned administrative agencies and health officials in FATA secretariat and PRCS NWFP Branch.
The need assessment carried out shows the vulnerability of the people of Northern Areas prone to natural disasters, particularly due to seismic activity apart from the sensitive location of many villages/ areas along the Line of Control. Therefore, the administration of NA has requested for permanent presence of PRCS services in the area. Initially the Northern Area Branch will be set up in Gilgit with a District Branch at Skardu. Later the PRCS will extend its presence in the other three districts.
