RESPONSE TO THE EARTH- QUAKE

In the aftermath of 8 October 2005 the Pakistan Red Crescent Society with the support of its Movement Partners, is involved in a massive operation in the earthquake-affected areas. Both in terms of urgent relief distribution and provision of medical services to the needy, the PRCS has emerged as the leading humanitarian organization in the country.
The geographical spread of the area, harsh winters and difficult terrain conditions posed a special challenge to the relief efforts. Undeterred, the PRCS Staff and Volunteers worked round the clock with dedication and commitment for the provision of relief services to the most vulnerable. The PRCS along with its Movement Partners has to date dispatched more than 3,000 trucks, containing more than 92,000 tents, 317,000 CGI Sheets, 800,000 blankets, 203,000 Tarpaulins, 50,000 Kitchen sets, 21,000 shelter repair kits and distributed over 20,000 tons of food items in the affected areas.
Network of Medical & Health facilities mobilized after the earthquake tragedy involved Emergency Response Units (ERUs), Medical Teams, Forward hospitals and a Base Hospital at Rawalpindi. In addition, Medicines have also been distributed to cater for the needs of earthquake-affected people. Helping people to overcome the psychological impact of the loss of family, friends, shelter, land and worldly possessions was important component of the primary health care. This Psychosocial Support Program has been accomplished through a dedicated team of 200 people, comprising of Staff and Volunteers. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion have also been an essential component of the overall relief program. Two water-purifying units have also been functioning at Balakot and Batagram.
Number of beneficiaries reached by the PRCS & its movement partners since 8th October has reached a figure of 1.6 Million. The relief conducted during this period, is worth more than Rs. 3.5 Billion.
While remaining actively involved in the relief operation, which is expected to last through out the winters, the PRCS is planning participating in the Reconstruction Phase, which is due to commence shortly. Being the leading humanitarian institution in the country, the PRCS wants to figure prominently in the National Reconstruction Plan. Towards that end, we plan to undertake reconstruction projects in the areas of Health, Education and Rehabilitation etc. Scope of the projects undertaken, will be in relation to the resources we are able to mobilize. These projects will be in conformity with the overall relief / reconstruction plan conceived at the National level. The plan has been prepared in total coordination with all concerned, including the Federal Relief Commission, The Earthquake Reconstruction & Rehabilitation Authority and the Government of Pakistan. The PRCS plans to execute the operation through fundraising and support of its movement partners. The projects will be executed in close coordination with AJK & NWFP Governments, other NGOs operating in the area and local authorities.

PRCS Appeal

The funds received so far are not sufficient to meet the massive requirement of reconstruction and also the rehabilitation needs of hundreds and thousands of distressed souls across the earthquake affected areas. Your contribution and support will play a vital role in alleviating the sufferings of most vulnerable.

You can contribute through generous financial contributions and also by sponsoring an entire reconstruction project, in which case it will be dedicated to the esteemed sponsor as per the agreed modalities.
